21 March 2026 Nowruz & Ekinox from Space

Nowruz (Persian “new day”)

Celebrated every year on March 21, Nowruz is an ancient spring festival that symbolizes the awakening of nature and the start of a new year. It has thousands of years of history and is observed in different ways across Central Asia, Iran, the Caucasus, the Balkans, and Turkey.

Origins and history

  • The word means “new day.” It coincides with the spring equinox, when the Sun passes directly over the equator and day and night are equal.
  • The earliest written references come from Iranian tradition; the Shahnameh describes it as the day when the mythical King Jamshid overcame winter and ushered in a new era.
  • In the Turkic world it is linked to the Ergenekon legend: the day the Turks melted an iron mountain and regained their freedom. Kashgari’s Dīwān Lughāt al-Turk also refers to it as “New Day.”
  • In 2009 UNESCO inscribed Nowruz on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity; in 2010 the UN declared March 21 the International Day of Nowruz.

Core meaning

  • Harmony between people and nature, renewal, abundance, and hope.
  • The end of winter’s hardships, the earth coming back to life, and an emphasis on social peace and solidarity.

Common traditions

  • Jumping over fire – Symbolizes purification from misfortune and brings health and happiness.
  • Contact with water – Washing the face or placing a ring in water while making a wish as a cleansing ritual.
  • Egg tapping – Represents fertility and the cycle of life.
  • Greenery (sabzeh / wheat sprouts) – Symbolizes rebirth and prosperity.
  • House cleaning, wearing new clothes, visiting family and neighbors – Saying goodbye to the old year and starting the new one fresh.
  • Special tables – In Iran, the “Haft-Sin” table with seven symbolic items (apple, garlic, vinegar, sumac, greens, hyacinth, sweet pudding).

Who celebrates it?

Iran, Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Iraq, Pakistan, and Turkey. In Turkey it is especially celebrated in the eastern and southeastern regions, as well as in major cities.

Place in Turkish culture

Some social media posts highlight Nowruz as a Turkic holiday, pointing to Ergenekon, Yengi Kün, the “Nevruz-ı Sultani” celebrations of the Seljuk and Ottoman periods, and traditions like mesir paste.

In short, Nowruz is seen across cultures as the herald of spring, a festival of unity and solidarity—celebrating nature’s cycle while strengthening community bonds.

Nowruz from space

From space, Nowruz is literally a celestial alignment moment—and you can see it clearly on March 21.

What is the equinox?

Earth orbits the Sun with a 23.4° axial tilt. This tilt creates the seasons. On March 21 the Earth’s axis is neither tilted toward the Sun nor away from it; it’s oriented sideways. The result: Sunlight hits the equator perpendicularly.

What you see from space

  • The Sun’s terminator line (the boundary between night and day) becomes a perfect longitudinal circle that bisects the equator.
  • Day and night are nearly equal at 12 hours everywhere—except at the poles.
  • At the poles, one is emerging from six months of daylight while the other is emerging from six months of darkness; the terminator runs straight from pole to pole.

The symbolism of this moment

  • Balance of light and dark: From space the planet is split evenly into light and dark halves, visually expressing “rebalancing” and “new beginnings.”
  • Seasonal transition: Spring begins in the Northern Hemisphere while autumn begins in the Southern Hemisphere. Ice recedes and greenery advances northward—you can imagine the green cover climbing toward the north.
  • Energy flow: With sunlight striking the equator directly, the Northern Hemisphere begins to warm; the agricultural cycle, flowering, and nature’s revival are triggered by this increase in light.

In short, on March 21 when you look at Earth from space, the planet is split right down the middle, light and dark equal—this literally shows Nowruz’s meaning of “new day, balance, and awakening” on a planetary scale.
